The most popular sight of Cyprus is the city-monastery of Kikkos. The monastery has been based in 1092. It is one of the most beautiful and biggest monasteries of island. It is known for having one of the three icons of Maiden Maria, written by the apostle St. Luca. You need to know, that visitors should be suitably dressed; in shorts and short skirts here you will not be able to enter.
It is the richest man's monastery. Here in cells there are TV, video recorders, computers. Close to icons can approach only orthodox people, and Catholics admire it from the barrier, though these rules are not strict. The icon of the Virgin is veiled with a curtain, embroidered with gold. It is said that to look on the icon is impossible, you can blind, since the power of it is improbably strong. Sometimes the icon is shown to the sun, by taking it out on the Olympus.
The monastery has been restored in the end of 80th years of 20-th century. Today Kikkos accepts about 100 thousand of tourists annually. Near to a monastery are opened different shops were you can buy sweets and souvenirs. On the territory of the monastery there is a small shop where you can buy liquors "Cherry" (cherry) or "Orange" (orange), prepared by monks.
If you have stopped in the hotel or have rented cyprus villas near any city of Cyprus, you can reach the monastery by car in about an hour. To come to Cyprus and to not visit this monastery is silly!
